Tibetan Mastiffs and children

TM’s in Tibet are often called Do-Kyi, which means "a dog you can tie up". Do-Kyi are kept by nomads, or yak-herders to guard the tents. Very often, Tibetan mastiffs in this environs can be seen in their homeland wearing very large red Yak’s collars which serve to make their great manes look even more impressive. Although fierce due to being tied up since puppy hood, these Mastiffs are very affectionate with the people they know and the smallest children can be seen to handle their TM with perfect ease and safety...

Each Tibetan Mastiff has its own personality, but generally, they are very protective and territorial. They are even-tempered, calm, thoughtful, dignified and loyal to its own family. TM’s love children though care should always be taken and dogs should never be unsupervised. Tibetan Mastiffs are generally excellent decision makers and know when they are dealing with children, but rough play between children can be misunderstood. Tibetan Mastiff puppy enthusiasm (in the form of a lick or a wagging tail) can be overwhelming to a young child. Caution is urged until you are confident about interactions between children and their individual dog.
